Art and Design

Art enhances children’s lives through fun, inspiration, creativity and self-expression.

Here at Walsall Wood we provide opportunities for all children to be creative, expressive and for them to master Art and Design techniques through all areas of Art. This meets the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: Article 29  (Children's education should help them develop their personalities, talents and abilities) and Article 31 (Every child has the right to take part in creative activities).

At Walsall Wood, the children will have an Art focussed week, covering strands from the National Curriculum, which is delivered by the class teacher. Across Key Stage 1 and 2 the children will focus on key aims to ensure there is consistency as the children move through the school. Skills are built upon so that children:

  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences;
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques;
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design;
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Additionally, there will be plenty of opportunities throughout the year for Art to be used in cross-curricular lessons.

Following our Prepare, Practise, Perform ethos, at the end of each topic the children will have the opportunity to ‘Perform’ their learning by demonstrating the range of skills they have learnt over the week. These will be in fun, exciting activities, which allow the children to show off the skills they have acquired.
